RAPTORS RISING VISION ON VULTURES

Overview: Kumaraguru Microcosm recently hosted RAPTOR, a session focused on vulture populations in Asia and their conservation. Experts Mr. Christopher Bowden and Dr. John Mallard from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and SAVE shared valuable insights on protecting these birds.

Project Description

Kumaraguru Microcosm recently hosted RAPTOR, an insightful session dedicated to understanding the status of vulture populations in Asia and the critical conservation efforts being undertaken to protect them. The session featured expert insights from Mr. Christopher Bowden and Dr. John Mallard, esteemed representatives of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and SAVE.

The discussion shed light on the drastic decline of white-rumped vultures, primarily due to the use of Diclofenac, a veterinary drug that led to fatal kidney failure in vultures feeding on contaminated carcasses. The experts highlighted the importance of evidence-based conservation through safety testing, GPS tracking, and ongoing monitoring, ensuring the survival of these keystone scavengers.

Special appreciation was extended to Arulagam and Mr. Bharathidasan for their instrumental role in executing vulture conservation programs in South India, safeguarding the last remaining vulture populations.

Through RAPTOR, attendees gained a deeper awareness of vulture conservation and the urgent need to protect these ecosystem guardians. Let’s continue to support such initiatives and raise awareness for a sustainable future!
