Overview:
The Food Waste Awareness Campaign was organized on September 29, 2025, across the Kumaraguru cafeterias and hostel messes to address the growing challenge of food waste on campus. The initiative aimed to create awareness among students, staff, and dining teams about responsible food consumption and its direct connection to sustainability and climate impact.
Description:
India wastes an estimated 50 kg of food per person every year (UNEP Food Waste Index, 2021) — a staggering figure in a country where millions still face hunger daily. Reflecting this national concern, the campaign at Kumaraguru focused on reducing avoidable food waste in cafeterias and hostels, where significant quantities are discarded after every meal.
A team of 20 student volunteers led the campaign through engaging exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and one-on-one discussions. They encouraged peers to follow the principle, “Take What You Need, Eat What You Take,” fostering responsibility in everyday dining choices. The initiative also connected food waste reduction to larger environmental goals such as carbon footprint minimization, water conservation, and sustainable living.
Key Highlights:
- Interactive pledge wall: “Zero Food Waste – My Plate, My Responsibility.”
- Collaboration with the Microcosm Sustainability Team for data analysis and outreach.
- Engagement of students, mess committees, and cafeteria staff in practical discussions.
