Project Description
During the DIST Conference, delegates engaged in an enriching birdwatching activity, set against the backdrop of the campus’s lush green spaces and diverse habitats. The serene environment provided the perfect opportunity to observe and appreciate the region’s avian diversity, with participants sighting over 30 bird species. This experience highlighted the rich biodiversity present within the institution and reinforced the importance of preserving natural ecosystems.
A key highlight of the event was the enthusiastic participation of over 30 Social Work Scholars from James Cook University. For many of them, this was their first experience with birdwatching, making it an eye-opening and memorable activity. Guided by experts, they learned to identify various bird species, understand their ecological roles, and develop an appreciation for biodiversity conservation.
Beyond just a recreational activity, this session served as an educational and immersive experience, encouraging discussions on sustainable practices, habitat conservation, and the role of urban green spaces in supporting wildlife. The birding walk fostered a deeper connection between the participants and nature, inspiring them to consider environmental stewardship in their academic and professional pursuits.
By integrating experiential learning with conservation awareness, the birding activity successfully blended education with engagement, leaving a lasting impact on the delegates. The event not only showcased the ecological wealth of the campus but also emphasized the role of institutions in fostering sustainability and environmental consciousness.
