Overview: The Samathur Biodiversity Study is a yearlong project documenting and preserving the rich biodiversity of the Samathur wetland. In collaboration with the Coimbatore Nature Society and Tamil Nadu Butterfly Society, it aims to understand the wetland’s ecology and promote sustainable conservation strategies.
Project Description
The Samathur Biodiversity Study is a yearlong initiative dedicated to documenting and preserving the rich biodiversity of the Samathur wetland. Conducted in collaboration with the Coimbatore Nature Society (CNS) and the Tamil Nadu Butterfly Society (TNBS), this study aims to understand the ecological significance of the wetland and implement sustainable conservation strategies.
Each month, a team of 10 experts specializing in birds and butterflies from CNS and TNBS, along with 10 student volunteers from Kumaraguru, conduct detailed biodiversity surveys. Their collective efforts focus on recording species diversity, monitoring habitat conditions, and assessing the impact of environmental changes.
So far, the study has documented 600+ species across 300 acres, highlighting the region’s remarkable biodiversity. The findings from this research will be crucial in shaping long-term conservation plans that not only protect the wetland’s flora and fauna but also promote community-driven environmental stewardship.
A key objective of this initiative is to design and implement sustainable strategies that will enhance the wetland’s ecological balance. By integrating scientific research with grassroots conservation efforts, the study aims to create a lasting social impact, inspiring more individuals to engage in biodiversity preservation.
Through continuous documentation and collaboration, the Samathur Biodiversity Study is laying the groundwork for a future where scientific conservation and community participation go hand in hand, ensuring the wetland thrives as a vital ecological hotspot for generations to come.
