Overview
The Rural Economy & Farmer Cooperatives course, part of the KCLAS Liberal Edge Program, offered students an immersive exploration into the structures shaping rural livelihoods and local markets. Through field engagement and practitioner interactions, participants examined how cooperative systems, traditional industries, and agricultural markets contribute to economic resilience and community development across rural landscapes.
About
A cohort of 25+ students from multiple departments engaged in a focused study of rural production systems and farmer cooperatives. The program combined classroom insights with experiential visits to Bhavani Jamakkalam weaving clusters and a turmeric farm market. Students observed cooperative functioning, collective bargaining, price discovery, aggregation systems, and livelihood networks. The immersion connected economic theory with on-ground realities, enabling participants to understand how decentralized institutions strengthen rural incomes, sustain traditional industries, and enhance market participation.
