Transforming Rural Rajasthan Through Sustainable Innovation
On 18th July 2026, Kumaraguru Microcosm hosted “An Evening with the Founders of Samakhya,” bringing together entrepreneurs, architects, researchers, sustainability practitioners, farmers, and community leaders for an inspiring dialogue on rural innovation and sustainable entrepreneurship.

Transforming Sheep Wool into Sustainable Solutions
One of the central themes of the discussion was the remarkable transformation of sheep wool once considered a low-value by-product into sustainable products for the built environment.
The speakers explained how nomadic pastoralists in Rajasthan traditionally discarded coarse wool during migration, since it held limited commercial value and added unnecessary weight to their journeys. Recognizing this challenge, Samakhya designed a decentralized value chain that allows pastoral communities to continue their traditional lifestyle while generating additional income through value addition.
The model begins with horizontal and vertical Pastoral Service Centers located along migration routes, where shepherds can access shearing facilities, veterinary services, medicines, and directly sell their wool. The wool is then processed at women-led fibre processing centres, where it is cleaned, sorted, and graded, before being transformed by skilled artisans into innovative products such as acoustic insulation panels, thermal insulation sheets, woven textiles, and sustainable interior solutions.
Rather than replacing traditional livelihoods, this model strengthens them ensuring economic opportunities remain within the community while preserving cultural identity and indigenous knowledge.
Innovation Rooted in Tradition
An engaging discussion followed on the importance of protecting traditional knowledge while embracing modern innovation. Participants reflected on how many rural communities possess generations of ecological wisdom that often goes unnoticed in today’s development models.

The speakers emphasized that sustainability is not merely about introducing new technologies, but about respecting existing practices and creating systems that enable communities to thrive without abandoning their heritage.
