SDG Conversation Series: Ozone & Atmospheric Change – From Science to Action

Overview

As part of World Ozone Day, Kumaraguru Microcosm hosted an SDG Conversation Series on “Ozone & Atmospheric Change: From Science to Action.” The session brought together 200+ students from various departments to explore the connections between ozone, climate, human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. The discussion emphasized scientific understanding, interdisciplinary learning, and actionable approaches to addressing atmospheric change.

About

The SDG Conversation Series served as a platform to bridge scientific knowledge and environmental action through an expert-led interaction by Dr. K. Boomiraj, Professor, Department of Environmental Sciences, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University. The session explored the dual role of ozone, highlighting its protective function in the stratosphere and its harmful effects at ground level. Key discussions included ozone concentration observations recorded in Ooty, where a maximum concentration of 138.42 ppb was reported in the presented April data, and the potential impacts of elevated ozone levels on floral traits and pollinator visitation. The conversation encouraged students to understand ozone as more than an atmospheric phenomenon, highlighting its wider implications for ecological health, agriculture, and climate action. The session strengthened awareness of the interconnected relationship between people, the planet, and environmental sustainability.
